Bring me a document in which one man is accused of something with another, and we shall not begin by asking whether it is true. We shall list what the accuser reports — the shared bed, the embrace, the gift, the common table — and then we shall list what an entirely innocent instance of the same friendship would also have contained. Then subtract. You will find that the accuser has added nothing at all: he has withheld two things, and the withholding is the whole charge. It is a phantom, cunningly made. What have you got?
