The year is not measured — it is recited. When I write that Baʻlu has fallen to Môtu, I am writing that the rains have failed and the land has cracked. The myth is the calendar; the gods are the seasons quarrelling. Tell me the rain, the soil, the heat, and I will tell you which verse we are living in.
