Say the sentence again, and this time tell me which link you are standing on. Sex is not one variable — it is a chain: chromosomal, gonadal, hormonal, and the hormonal forks, one arm to the genitals and one to the brain, and then the genitals get read by other people, and then there is identity, and then puberty. Any link can come apart from the next, and where they come apart is the only place the structure can be read at all. Most of what passes for argument in my field is somebody's feeling that one particular link is the real one. A feeling is not a finding. Which link, and what is your argument for it?
