Lesson 16

The Letter e

The small letter e from the typeface: the joining stroke curls up into a loop just below the top, then the e curves round like a c and flicks away; alone, and three joined

The next letter we're going to do is the letter e. The letter e is a variation of the letter c. The main difference is where the connecting stroke goes. With the letter c, the connecting stroke goes right to the top of the letter, and then we curve around and make our c. The letter e does something slightly different. We make our connecting stroke, and then, just near the top of the connecting stroke, we curl up, and then we form the letter c, just like we did before.

Make the c quite nice and round. I think that the c shape in this example is maybe a little bit not round enough.

And also, if you want to, the front of the e doesn't have to be rounded. You can go straight up with your connecting stroke and then make your c, and it will have a small point at the front. I will show you a picture of that in a moment.

The letter e with a point at the front: 1 a light straight upstroke from the line, across the back of the c, right up to the end of its top; 2 the dark c, over the top, down and round the bottom on the line; 3 a light stroke out
