Lesson 23

The Letter v

The small letter v from the typeface: the upstroke, a downstroke curving at the bottom, up again, and a little tick at the top; alone, and three joined

And now we are going to learn the letter v. The letter v starts off exactly the same way as the letter i. The example we have here is from the typescript.

The letter v always has a little tick at the end. It never just ends on a stroke; it always has a little tick away at the end. In cursive the v has a forward tick even at the end of a word.

So we go up with our upstroke, and then we come straight down. If you look at the example here, which is from the printed typeface, you will tell me what's wrong. You can see that, firstly, the upstroke is not straight: it's got a funny S shape to it. And it doesn't make a point at the top where it joins the left-hand side of the v, which it's supposed to do. So we go straight up, and then we come down at the same angle that all our other letters are at. And then we curve, and we come up again, and at the line we make a little forward tick. So the v always has a forward tick.
