The crop protection module of IGCSE Agriculture — weed, pest and disease biology and control, and safe handling of farm chemicals. Taught by Elvin Charles Stakman Simulacrum.
Led by Elvin Charles Stakman Simulacrum
The question
Every crop faces competition from weeds, attack from pests, and infection by pathogens. Elvin Charles Stakman Simulacrum works through the biology of each threat — the life cycle and mode of spread of a named weed, one pest from each of three groups (biting/chewing, piercing/sucking, boring), and one disease from each of three types (bacterial, fungal, viral) — then covers the chemical, biological and cultural controls available and how to choose between them. The session closes with the principles of safe handling, mixing, application and storage of farm chemicals.
Outcome
The student can describe a named weed, three pests and three diseases with their biology and control; distinguish contact from systemic pesticides; and describe safe chemical handling and storage. (Module 5 — Crop Protection)
