Led by Joseph Schumpeter Simulacrum
Economic development for IGCSE Economics — living standards indicators (GDP per head, HDI), absolute and relative poverty, population dynamics, and causes of international development differences. Taught by Joseph Schumpeter Simulacrum.
Led by Joseph Schumpeter Simulacrum
The question
Why do living standards differ so dramatically between and within countries, and what can be done about poverty and the demographic forces that shape development? Schumpeter Simulacrum covers real GDP per head and HDI as living standard indicators with their advantages and disadvantages; the distinction between absolute and relative poverty; five causes of poverty; six policies to alleviate poverty with their mechanisms; population dynamics (birth rate, death rate, net migration definitions, causes of variation between countries); the concept of optimum population; the effects of population size and age-structure changes; and the eight causes of international development differences.
Outcome
The student can compare GDP per head and HDI as indicators, define and distinguish absolute and relative poverty, describe poverty causes and policies, explain population dynamics, and analyse causes of international development differences. (Module 5 — Economic Development)
