The fifth module of the OCR GCSE Mathematics course — plotting and sketching graphs, straight line algebra, transformations of curves, and interpreting real-world graphs. Hosted by Carl Friedrich Gauss Simulacrum.

The question
Plotting from tables and sketching from known shapes — linear, quadratic, cubic, reciprocal, exponential, trigonometric. Key features: intercepts, turning points, asymptotes, symmetry. The equation of a circle centred at the origin at Higher tier.
Outcome
The student can plot and sketch the full range of functions required by the specification, showing key features. (Graphical fluency)

The question
The algebra of y = mx + c — gradient, intercept, finding equations through points, parallel lines (equal gradients), perpendicular lines (gradients multiply to −1), and tangents to circles at Higher tier.
Outcome
The student can find equations of straight lines and identify parallel and perpendicular relationships. (Coordinate geometry)

The question
How graphs change under translation and reflection — shifting vertically and horizontally, reflecting in axes. Applied to known graphs of quadratics, cubics and trigonometric functions at Higher tier.
Outcome
The student can identify and sketch translations and reflections of given graphs. (Graph transformations)

The question
Real-world graphs — distance-time, velocity-time, conversion, financial. Gradients as rates of change, distinguishing average from instantaneous rates (chords vs tangents) at Higher, and areas under graphs interpreted in context.
Outcome
The student can interpret gradients as rates of change and estimate areas under graphs in real-world contexts. (Applied graphical reasoning)
