Lesson 11 Lithuanian: A Latinum Institute Modern Language Course

have → turėti – Verb (possession and obligation)

INTRODUCTION

What does "have" mean in Lithuanian?

English "have" does many jobs. It expresses possession (I have a brother), obligation (I have to go), and the perfect tense (I have seen). It also appears in fixed phrases where nothing is owned: have breakfast, have a shower, have a good time.

Lithuanian divides these jobs. The verb turėti covers the first two. It means "to have, to own, to hold": Aš turiu brolį. "I have a brother." With an infinitive it means "to have to, must": Turiu eiti. "I have to go." Lithuanian does not use turėti to form the perfect. "I have seen" is simply the past tense mačiau, or the compound esu matęs built with būti ("to be"). The fixed English phrases are usually single verbs in Lithuanian: pusryčiauti "to have breakfast", praustis po dušu "to have a shower".

Turėti is an ordinary transitive verb. What is had goes into the accusative: turiu brolį, turiu katę. Three rules of Lithuanian grammar change that case, and learners meet all three with this verb at once:

- Negation takes the genitive. Turiu laiką becomes neturiu laiko, "I have no time." (You met this rule with jo / jos in Lesson 10.) - An indefinite quantity takes the genitive (the partitive genitive). Ar turi laiko? "Do you have (any) time?" Turėsime svečių. "We'll have (some) guests." - The numbers 10–20, the round tens, and words of quantity take the genitive plural. daug draugų "many friends", dvidešimt vištų "twenty hens".

Etymology: turėti is an old Baltic verb of the -ėti class (present turi, past turėjo). Latvian turēt ("to hold, to keep") is its close cognate. The sense "hold" is still felt in turėti rankoje "to hold in one's hand".

Orthographic points: the infinitive and all the past, future and conditional forms keep the dotted ė: turėti, turėjau, turėsiu, turėčiau. The present tense has no ė: turiu, turi, turime, turite. In turiu the i is not a vowel of its own. It marks the r as soft: /tʊˈrʲʊ/.

FAQ: How do you say "I have" in Lithuanian? Aš turiu, or simply turiu, since the ending already means "I": Turiu klausimą. "I have a question." "I don't have" is neturiu, with the thing in the genitive: Neturiu pinigų. "I have no money."

FAQ: How do you say "I have to" in Lithuanian? Turiu + infinitive: Turiu dirbti. "I have to work." Two other common ways are reikia with the dative (Man reikia dirbti, "I need to work") and the stronger privalau (Privalau dirbti, "I am obliged to work").

FAQ: Is "Pas mane yra…" correct for "I have…"? No. That phrase is a Slavic pattern (compare Russian у меня есть). The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language (VLKK) lists possessive pas as an error. Say Aš turiu…, and Neturiu for Pas mane nėra.

Key Takeaways

- turėti = "to have, own, hold"; the thing had is accusative: Turiu brolį. - After a negative it is genitive: Neturiu brolio. Neturiu laiko. - turėti + infinitive = "to have to, must": Turiu eiti. The conditional turėčiau = "I should": Turėčiau eiti. - Lithuanian does not build a perfect tense with "have", and it does not use turėti for age. "I am twenty" is Man dvidešimt metų. - Say Aš turiu…, not Pas mane yra…

PRONUNCIATION GUIDE

The IPA follows the broad transcription used in this course (see Lesson 10): short a /ɐ/, long a/ą /aː/, ė /eː/, y/į /iː/, o /oː/, short u /ʊ/, ū/ų /uː/, ie /iɛ/, uo /uɔ/. Palatalised consonants are marked ʲ. The stressed syllable is marked ˈ.

- turėti /tʊˈrʲeːtʲɪ/ — infinitive; stress and length on ė. - turiu /tʊˈrʲʊ/ — "I have"; the i only softens the r: two syllables, "too-RYU". - turi /tʊˈrʲɪ/ — "you (sg.) have"; stress on the ending. - turi /ˈtʊrʲɪ/ — "he / she / it / they have"; stress on the first syllable. The spelling is the same as the 2nd person, but the stress is different. - turime /ˈtʊrʲɪmʲɛ/, turite /ˈtʊrʲɪtʲɛ/ — "we have", "you (pl.) have". - turėjau /tʊˈrʲeːjɐʊ/ — "I had"; turėjo /tʊˈrʲeːjoː/ — "he / she / they had". - turėsiu /tʊˈrʲeːsʲʊ/ — "I will have"; turės /tʊˈrʲeːs/ — "he / she / they will have". - turėčiau /tʊˈrʲeːtʃɛʊ/ — "I would have / I should". - neturiu /nʲɛtʊˈrʲʊ/ — "I don't have"; ne- is written together with the verb.

Lithuanian r is a tapped or lightly trilled tongue-tip r, never the English gliding r. Soft /rʲ/ is the same sound with the tongue raised toward the palate, as if a faint y followed.

SECTION D: GRAMMAR EXPLANATION

These are the grammar rules for "have" in Lithuanian:

1. The conjugation of turėti

Turėti belongs to the second conjugation (present in -i). Principal parts: turėti, turi, turėjo.

Present: aš turiu, tu turi, jis / ji turi mes turime, jūs turite, jie / jos turi

Past: aš turėjau, tu turėjai, jis / ji turėjo mes turėjome, jūs turėjote, jie / jos turėjo

Future: aš turėsiu, tu turėsi, jis / ji turės mes turėsime, jūs turėsite, jie / jos turės

Conditional: aš turėčiau, tu turėtum, jis / ji turėtų Imperative: turėk, turėkime, turėkite Habitual past: aš turėdavau, jis / ji turėdavo

As in every Lithuanian verb, the third person is the same in the singular and the plural: jis turi "he has", jie turi "they have". In speech the plural endings -me, -te are often shortened: turim, turit, turėsim.

2. The case of the thing had

- Affirmative, definite or countable: accusative. Turiu brolį (11.1), turi katę (11.3), turime naują butą (11.5), turi du vaikus (11.6). - Negated: genitive, always. Neturiu pinigų (11.4), neturėjau jokio noro (11.7), neturi nei brolių, nei seserų (11.13). Compare Turiu brolį with Neturiu brolio. - Indefinite amount ("some, any"): genitive (partitive). Ar turi laiko? (11.2), Turėsime svečių (11.8), daugiau laiko (11.11). Ar turi laiką? is also heard, but the genitive is the natural choice when you mean "any time at all". - After daug, mažai, daugiau, the numbers 10–20 and the round tens (trisdešimt, šimtas…): genitive plural for countable things, genitive singular for mass nouns. Daug darbo (11.9), daug draugų (11.13).

3. turėti + infinitive: obligation

Turiu eiti (11.10) = "I have to go". The degrees of necessity: - Turiu eiti. "I have to go." (an everyday obligation) - Man reikia eiti. "I need to go." (literally "to me it is necessary to go", with the subjectless reikia from Lesson 10) - Privalau eiti. "I am obliged to go." (formal, legal) - Turėčiau eiti. "I ought to go / I should go." (the conditional softens it)

Negated, neturi + infinitive in formal texts means "must not": Žmogui neturi būti kliudoma… "A person must not be hindered…" (Section F).

4. The conditional: turėčiau

"If I had…" is jei turėčiau…, and the main clause is also conditional: Jei turėčiau daugiau laiko, daugiau skaityčiau (11.11). Lithuanian uses the conditional in both halves. English puts a past tense in the if-clause ("if I had"); Lithuanian does not.

5. What turėti does not do

- No perfect tense. "I have eaten" is valgiau ("I ate") or esu valgęs (būti + past active participle). Never turiu valgęs. - No age. "I am twenty" / "I have twenty years" is Man dvidešimt metų (dative + genitive plural). - No "have breakfast / have a shower". Use a verb: pusryčiauti, praustis po dušu. - No "have got". English I've got is simply turiu.

Common Mistakes

- Mistake: accusative after a negative. Neturiu laiką. Correct: Neturiu laiko. - Mistake: the Slavic possessive. Pas mane yra brolis. Correct: Aš turiu brolį. Pas mane nėra pinigų. Correct: Neturiu pinigų. - Mistake: an English perfect. Aš turiu matęs. Correct: Mačiau or Esu matęs. - Mistake: turėti for age. Aš turiu dvidešimt metų. Correct: Man dvidešimt metų. - Mistake: a past tense in the if-clause. Jei turėjau laiko, skaityčiau. Correct: Jei turėčiau laiko, skaityčiau. - Mistake: dropping the dot. tureti, turejau. Correct: turėti, turėjau. Without the dot, e is a different vowel. - Mistake: after daug or a large number, the nominative or accusative. daug draugai, dvidešimt vištos. Correct: daug draugų, dvidešimt vištų.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

SECTION E: CULTURAL CONTEXT

A word used every minute

Turėti is one of the most frequent verbs of Lithuanian, because it does double duty as "have" and "must". A day's speech is full of it: Ar turite…? in every shop ("Do you have…?"), Turiu klausimą ("I have a question"), Turiu bėgti ("I have to run"), Neturiu laiko ("I haven't got time").

The language of rights

Official Lithuanian states rights with turi teisę ("has the right"). The 1992 Constitution uses the formula again and again (Section F), and it has passed into ordinary speech: Tu neturi teisės taip sakyti! "You have no right to say that!" Note the genitive teisės after the negative.

"Pas mane" and the language norm

In colloquial speech, especially where Russian or Polish has long been in contact with Lithuanian, people sometimes say pas mane yra… for "I have…". Lithuanian language care (kalbos kultūra) has long treated this as a loan construction. The State Commission of the Lithuanian Language lists possessive pas among its major errors (didžiosios klaidos). In writing, in school and in the media the norm is turiu.

Scripture and proverbial speech

Kas turi ausis klausyti – teklauso! (11.15) is the Gospel formula that closes several of Christ's parables. Like its English counterpart it has become a set phrase, used half-seriously to mean "take the hint". The permissive prefix te- ("let…") on teklauso is an old, solemn form. Modern speech says tegul klauso (compare tegul būna, Lesson 10).

Context: The Constitution is the most widely read piece of formal Lithuanian. Its second chapter, Žmogus ir valstybė ("The Individual and the State"), states rights in short, lapidary sentences. Article 25, on freedom of conviction and expression, uses turėti in four different ways within five sentences: "has" (turi teisę), "to have" (turėti įsitikinimus), "must not" (neturi būti), and the participle "held" (turimą).

F-D: Grammar and Literary Commentary

- turi teisę turėti (F.1): the finite verb and the infinitive of the same verb stand side by side, "has the right to have". Lithuanian does not avoid this repetition, and the legal style prefers exactness to elegance. - savo: the reflexive possessive, "one's own". It refers back to the subject whatever its person: turiu savo nuomonę "I have my own opinion", turi savo įsitikinimus "he has his own convictions". Using jo ("his") here would point to somebody else. - neturi būti kliudoma (F.2): negated turėti + infinitive = "must not". The construction is impersonal. Kliudoma is the neuter present passive participle, used without a subject, and the person hindered is in the dative (žmogui), because kliudyti ("to hinder") governs the dative: kliudyti kam. - įstatymo nustatyta tvarka (F.3): an instrumental of manner, "in the procedure established by law". Tvarka and its participle nustatyta are instrumental singular. In the instrumental the final -a is short, so it looks like the nominative on the page. - turimą informaciją (F.3): turimas, turima is the present passive participle of turėti: "(being) had, held". It agrees with informaciją (feminine accusative singular). Valstybės įstaigų turima informacija = "information held by State institutions". The agent stands in the genitive before the participle, a very common pattern in written Lithuanian. - bei (F.2): a bookish "and", used in formal writing to vary ir.

Part C: Narrative in Lithuanian Only

Mūsų močiutė gyvena kaime ir turi seną medinį namą. Ji turi karvę, dvi ožkas ir dvidešimt vištų.

Praėjusią vasarą mes su Tomu turėjome mėnesį atostogų. Nusprendėme jį praleisti pas močiutę. Močiutė neturi nei televizoriaus, nei interneto. Iš pradžių Tomas nežinojo, ką veikti.

– Čia nėra ką veikti! Net ryšio neturiu!

Močiutė nusišypsojo ir pasakė:

– Turi rankas, turi kojas, turi galvą. Ko tau daugiau reikia?

Kitą rytą turėjome atsikelti penktą valandą ir pamelžti karvę. Tomas turėjo nešti vandenį, o aš turėjau rinkti kiaušinius. Vakarais neturėjome ekranų, todėl močiutė pasakodavo pasakas.

Po mėnesio Tomas nenorėjo važiuoti namo.

– Močiute, tu turi viską, ko reikia žmogui, – pasakė jis.

– Ne, vaikeliai, – atsakė ji. – Aš turiu jus. Tai ir yra viskas.

Part D: Grammar Notes for the Genre Section

- Possession, accusative. turi seną medinį namą (11.16), turi karvę, dvi ožkas (11.17), turi rankas… kojas… galvą (11.24), turiu jus (11.30). The adjectives agree with their noun in the accusative: seną medinį namą, all masculine accusative singular. - Genitive after a number. dvidešimt vištų (11.17): after 10–20 and the round tens, the counted noun is genitive plural. With du / dvi (two) the noun stays accusative: dvi ožkas. Dvi is the feminine form because ožka is feminine (compare du vaikus, 11.6). - Genitive after negation. neturi nei televizoriaus, nei interneto (11.20), ryšio neturiu (11.22), neturėjome ekranų (11.27). - mes su Tomu (11.18): literally "we with Tomas", the Lithuanian way of saying "Tomas and I". The plural verb (turėjome) counts both people. - Genitive of quantity. mėnesį atostogų (11.18), "a month of holidays". Atostogos ("holiday, leave") exists only in the plural. - Obligation in the past. turėjome atsikelti (11.25), turėjo nešti… turėjau rinkti (11.26): past tense turėti + infinitive = "had to". - Two senses side by side. 11.26–11.27 put "had to" (turėjo nešti) next to "didn't have" (neturėjome ekranų). The grammar tells them apart: an infinitive follows the first, a genitive noun the second. - Stress tells the person. Turi rankas (11.24) is 2nd person, /tʊˈrʲɪ/, "you have". In 11.16–11.17 turi is 3rd person, /ˈtʊrʲɪ/, "she has". - pas + accusative = "at someone's place": pas močiutę (11.19), pas gydytoją (11.10). This is correct Lithuanian. Pas is wrong only when it is used for possession (pas mane yra, Section D). - nėra ką veikti (11.22): "there is nothing to do", literally "there isn't what to do". A fixed impersonal pattern: nėra ką + infinitive. - ko reikia žmogui (11.29): reikėti takes the thing needed in the genitive (ko) and the person in the dative (žmogui). - Habitual past. pasakodavo (11.27) = "used to tell, would tell" (suffix -dav-, as lydėdavo in 11.14). - Vocatives. Močiute (11.29) from močiutė; vaikeliai (11.30), plural of the diminutive vaikelis, "little child". Addressing grown grandchildren as vaikeliai is warm, not childish. - jį (11.19) refers back to mėnesį, a masculine noun, exactly as in Lesson 10.

PRONUNCIATION AND ORTHOGRAPHY NOTES

- The key forms: turėti /tʊˈrʲeːtʲɪ/, turiu /tʊˈrʲʊ/, turi /tʊˈrʲɪ/ (you) or /ˈtʊrʲɪ/ (he, she, they), turime /ˈtʊrʲɪmʲɛ/, turėjau /tʊˈrʲeːjɐʊ/, turėsiu /tʊˈrʲeːsʲʊ/, turėčiau /tʊˈrʲeːtʃɛʊ/, turimas /ˈtʊrʲɪmɐs/. - ė vs e: ė is a close long /eː/, and e is open /ɛ/ or /æː/. They are separate letters, and the dot is never optional: turėjo "had", not turejo. - Silent softening i: turiu, turėsiu, turėčiau, močiutė, kiaušinius, daugiau. Here the i softens the consonant before it and is not pronounced as a vowel. - Assimilation in clusters: voiced consonants lose their voice before voiceless ones: dirbti /ˈdʲɪrptʲɪ/, pamelžti /pɐˈmʲɛlʃtʲɪ/, daug /dɐʊk/ at the end of a word. The spelling does not change. - ne- joined to the verb: neturiu, neturėjau, nenorėjo, nežinojo. The negative is always written as one word with the verb. - Punctuation: a comma before todėl ("so") when it links clauses (11.9, 11.27), before bet (11.13), and around relative clauses (šunį, kuris…, 11.14; viską, ko reikia…, 11.29). Nei…, nei… take a comma before the second nei (11.13, 11.20). Direct speech in Lithuanian narrative opens with a dash (–), as in the Genre Section.
