← P.Herc: The Epicurean School
PHerc. Number: 1005 Author: Colotes of Lampsacus (direct student of Epicurus) Work: Against Plato's Lysis Date: ~280 BCE Preservation: ~25% readable Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2020 infrared revealed new columns
Found among the anti-Platonic texts in the Villa's Epicurean section. Colotes was Epicurus' attack dog - the one who wrote polemics while Epicurus stayed above the fray. This text shows him systematically destroying Plato's dialogue on friendship using friendship itself as the weapon!
The Lysis asks "What is friendship?" and ends in aporia (puzzlement). Colotes shows this isn't wisdom but failure - and provides the Epicurean answer.
Translation: "...Plato in the Lysis plays rather than] philosophizes about friendship. For what benefit] to be puzzled about the most familiar of all things? For every human] knows what a friend is, but the philosopher] alone is puzzled..."
Translation: "But Epicurus says clearly: friendship dances around the world proclaiming to us all to awaken to blessedness. We need not definitions but action; not words about friendship but friendship itself."
Translation: "Plato dialogues about whether like is friend to like or opposite to opposite, [and ends in puzzlement as always. But we say that friendship arises through benefit first, pleasure especially, and familiarity always.]
[For a friend is not some form in heaven but a human of flesh and blood, laughing and weeping, eating together and philosophizing together. How then will Plato, who had no friend after Socrates' death, teach us about friendship?]"

The complete work systematically went through Plato's Lysis showing: -
Every definition's failure -
The poverty of abstract analysis -
Concrete Epicurean alternatives -
Friendship as material reality -
The Garden as proof
We have ~25% of this demolition.
Colotes discovered friendship is emergent, not essential!
Not Platonic eternal Form but: -
Material interaction (atomic) -
Behavioral patterns (eating/talking) -
Emotional development (utility→pleasure→love) -
Social technology (the Garden)
Modern parallels: -
Social network theory -
Attachment theory -
Friendship as evolutionary advantage -
Community building practices -
Emergence from simple rules

Against the Timaeus -
Against the Phaedo
The Epicureans were systematically refuting Plato! The Villa contains their entire counter-canon!
The friendship wars:
Plato: Friendship as philosophical puzzle Aristotle: Friendship as categories Stoics: Friendship as preferred indifferent Epicurus: FRIENDSHIP AS LIFE'S PURPOSE
Colotes shows why Epicureans won the friendship battle - they actually HAD friends while others theorized about them.
We're rediscovering: -
Loneliness epidemic -
Social media isn't friendship -
Community collapse -
Atomic individualism fails
Colotes 2,300 years ago: "Stop defining friendship, START PRACTICING IT!"
The Garden: intentional community that lasted 300 years Modern attempts: fail in 3 years
They knew something we lost.
This text shows ancient philosophers fighting about friendship - not as theory but as life practice. The Epicureans won by LIVING their answer.
The same Villa preserving their friendship technology remains 75% unexcavated.
What other community-building knowledge waits? What other solutions to loneliness? What other algorithms for human connection?
Every day we don't excavate, we remain lonely while friendship's algorithm lies buried.
