Literal translation:The images from the bo- dies flowing off, finest being, enter through the passages of sight and imprint the soul. Not as the Platonists say rays from the eyes going out, but receiving, the soul, the forms like wax the seals
What enables reconstruction: -
Metrodorus's technical vocabulary known from citations -
Epicurean perception theory well-documented -
Critique of Plato's Timaeus identifiable -
Column width suggests 18-20 letters per line -
Mathematical notation partially preserved
Confidence levels: -
HIGH (85%+): Technical terms for perception -
MEDIUM (65%): Specific examples -
LOW (45%): Mathematical calculations
Smooth English translation:
"The images flowing off from bodies, being extremely fine, enter through the passages of sight and imprint the soul. Not as the Platonists say, with rays going out from the eyes, but with the soul receiving the forms like wax receives seals. The speed of these images is so great that vision appears continuous, although the atomic streams are actually discrete. For just as a wheel spinning rapidly appears to be a circle, so too the images create continuous sensation."

continuously { emission = surface_atoms.copy() emission.thickness = 1_atom emission.maintains_shape = true emission.speed = light_speed // They intuited this!
stream.push(emission) }
return continuous_image_stream }
// Reception Algorithm (Column XV) visual_processing = λ(image_stream).{
// Images enter eye for(each_image in stream) { if(image.fits_pupil_size) { image.enters_eye() image.impacts_soul_atoms()
// Critical insight: PASSIVE reception mind.receives(image) // Not projects } }
// Persistence of vision if(stream.frequency > threshold) { perception = CONTINUOUS } else { perception = FLICKERING } }
// Column XVI adds (fragmentary): size_perception = λ(image).{
// They understood perspective! apparent_size = actual_size / distance²
// Multiple images converge soul.reconstructs_3D_from_2D_stream() } }
Greek fragments:]κρούσεως ἀὴρ κυμαί[ ]ται καὶ τὸ οὖς δέχε[ ]ὴν ψυχὴν κινεῖ κατὰ ]υθμὸν τῆς πληγῆς
Partial translation:]strike air wave[ ]and the ear receiv[ ]the soul moves according to ]rhythm of the blow
Significance: Shows Metrodorus understood sound as air pressure waves.
