Cum videmus turrim procul rotundam, visus vere dicit rotundam esse imaginem in ocu- lo; iudicium au- tem addit turrim ipsam rotundam [es- se. Si autem acceda- mus, sensus ostendet quadratam. Non mentita est prima sensatio; vere enim rotun- da erat imago. Mens autem erravit exspec- tans rem esse qualem imaginem.]

English translation:The sensations do not lie but are always true. But opinion lies by adding what does not exist. When we see a tower from afar as round, the sight truthfully says that round is the image in the eye; but judgment adds that the tower itself is round. [But if we approach, sensation will show it square. The first sensation did not lie; for truly round was the image. But the mind erred expecting the thing to be like the image.]
