Papyrus: PHerc. 1065 Author: Philodemus of Gadara (c. 110-35 BCE) Work: Πρὸς τοὺς Σοφιστάς Date: ~45 BCE Preservation: ~21% readable Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2021 hyperspectral + AI enhancement
Written during the height of Roman education mania. Wealthy Romans paid fortunes to Greek sophists for their sons’ education. Philodemus exposes the educational-industrial complex as intellectual fraud.
Margins show VIOLENT reactions - this text attacked powerful people’s livelihoods.
Translation: “Sophists sell wisdom like fishmongers sell fish, except fishmongers have fish, sophists have no wisdom.
They set prices: -
Rhetoric: five talents -
Philosophy: ten talents -
Complete education: whatever they can seize
But what do they teach? To speak persuasively about what they don’t know. Art not of wisdom but of pretending wisdom...”
Translation: “...enter rich ignorant youths, exit poor ignorant braggarts. The only learning: how to seem to know while not knowing. Like theater of education, not true education...
Fathers rejoice hearing sons speak Greek, not knowing they speak emptiness, though beautifully empty...”
Translation: “True education: -
Not memorizing but understanding -
Not speaking but doing -
Not seeming but being -
Not competing but seeking -
Not winning but learning
The sophist teaches opposites: theater, imitation, appearance, falsehood...”
Based on educational patterns:[RECONSTRUCTED from testimonia]

[THE SOPHISTS’ SUBJECTS:
