Column III: The Monologue Disease

Greek text (diagnostic):οἱ πλεῖστοι οὐ διαλέγονται ἀλλὰ μονολογοῦσι παρ’ ἀλλήλους. ὁ μὲν λέγει ἃ προπαρεσκεύασεν, ὁ δὲ περιμένει παῦλαν ἵνα εἴπῃ τὰ ἑαυτοῦ.

οὐδεὶς ἀκούει· πάντες σκέπτονται τί ἐροῦσιν. ὥσπερ ὑποκριταὶ ἐπὶ σκηνῆς τὴν σειρὰν ἀναμένοντες. ἀλλὰ ἡ ἀληθὴς ὁμιλία οὐ θέατρον...

Translation: “Most don’t converse but monologue past each other. One speaks what he prepared, the other waits for a pause to say his own things.

No one listens; all think what they’ll say. Like actors on stage awaiting their turn. But true conversation isn’t theater...”

a) Be silent in body and mind b) Hear not only words but tone c) Seek what’s not said d) Repeat before answering e) Question before contradicting

One doing these will find that most say other than what he thinks he hears...”

Translation: “Best conversation like improvised music: no one knows where it will go, but all contribute. Not preset plan but co-creation.
