Φιλόδημος Φιλωνίδου Βίος | The Mathematician Who Calculated Happiness

Biography of Epicurus’s Secret Weapon - The Man Who Made Epicureanism Mathematical

MANUSCRIPT DATA

DISCOVERY CONTEXT

Biography of Philonides of Laodicea - mathematician, astronomer, and Epicurean who converted King Demetrius using GEOMETRIC PROOFS of pleasure. Shows Epicureanism had sophisticated mathematical wing.

Margin: “This man proved happiness mathematically!”

THE SURVIVING TEXT

Column III: The Geometric Proof of Pleasure

Translation: “Philonides proved to the king thus:

‘Let AB be life, C pleasure, D pain. If C > D throughout AB, happiness. If D > C, misery. As in geometry, so in life.’

The king marveled. ‘A philosopher geometer!’ But Philonides: ‘No, a geometer philosopher. Truth one, methods many...’”

Column VII: The Astronomy of Death

Greek (cosmic perspective):...]ὁ Φιλωνίδης τὰς ἀστρῶν περιόδους [μετρῶν εἶπε·] “εἰ ὁ Ἄρης χιλίων ἐτῶν κύκλον [ποιεῖ, τί ἐμοὶ] οἱ ὀγδοήκοντα ἐνιαυτοί; στιγ[μὴ ἐν ἀπείρῳ]. διὰ τί οὖν φοβοῦμαι θάνατ[ον;

Translation: “...Philonides measuring star periods said: ‘If Mars makes thousand-year cycle, what to me are eighty years? Point in infinity. Why then fear death?

Having measured he said: ‘My life to cosmos as atom to mountain. But atom exists! And I existed. This suffices...’”

Column XII: Converting Kings

Translation: “Philonides approached Demetrius not arguing but diagramming. He showed diagrams of pleasure and tranquility.

‘King, your rule is cone. At peak you’re alone, base is enemies. Unstable the shape. But friendship is sphere: everywhere equal, stable.’

The king changed his life...”

Based on biographical evidence:[RECONSTRUCTED from pattern]

Ἡ ἀταραξία = lim(ταραχή → 0)

[MATHEMATICAL EPICUREANISM:

Philonides’ Axioms: 1. All pleasure measurable 2. All pain quantifiable 3. Happiness = ∫(pleasure - pain)dt 4. Tranquility = lim(disturbance → 0)

Theorems: - Infinite pleasure impossible - Maximum pleasure finite - Death = 0 (neither positive nor negative)]

THE PHILONIDES ALGORITHM

// Life as calculus problem happiness = ∫(pleasure - pain)dt
