← P.Herc: Stoics & Miscellanea
Papyrus: PHerc. 230 Author: Unknown Stoic (possibly Posidonius school) Work: Περὶ Εἱμαρμένης Date: ~1st century BCE Preservation: ~20% readable Current Location: Biblioteca Nazionale, Naples Imaging: 2022 X-ray phase contrast
Found among Stoic texts. This work pushes determinism to its absolute limit - past, present, and future are identical, change is illusion, free will is accepting necessity.
Margins show Epicurean reader’s horror: “If this is true, why write? Why read?”
Translation: “Past and future and present are one and the same; differing only in relation to the observer. As a rolling cylinder has all parts, but different ones touch earth at each moment.
Thus the cosmos: everything already has happened, is happening, will happen. The sensation of ‘now’ is error of the partial mind...”
Translation: “...nothing uncaused. The falling of leaf from tree connects to movement of stars. The logic simple: every cause is result of prior cause, every result cause of following.
If you knew all things now existing precisely, you would know all things to be necessarily...”
Translation: “Freedom is not doing what you want but wanting what must be. The wise runs with fate, the fool is dragged.
Example: dog tied to cart; if follows, is led and follows; if resists, dragged nonetheless. Thus human to fate...”
Based on Stoic logic:[RECONSTRUCTED from system]
[PROOF OF FATE:
Premise A: Everything happening has cause Premise B: Every cause necessary result Premise C: Chain of causes infinite to past Conclusion: All future already determined
Therefore fate = cosmic logos Necessary, unchangeable, complete]

Epicurean’s objection: “εἰ πάντα ὥρισται, διὰ τί γράφεις;” [If all determined, why do you write?]
Stoic’s response: “ὅτι ὥρισται γράφειν” [Because determined to write]
Epicurean’s fury: “ἄρα οὐδεὶς αἴτιος κακῶν!” [So no one responsible for evils!]
