Lesson 10

То / оно / га (to / ono / ga) — "It"

English it does two jobs that Serbian keeps entirely apart.

As a pronoun standing for a thing, Serbian uses the neuter оно or, far more often, the demonstrative то, with the clitic га in the accusative. But Serbian pronouns carry gender, so a thing is it only if the noun is neuter: a book (књига, feminine) is је, a table (сто, masculine) is га. There is no genderless it.

As a dummy subjectit is raining, it is cold, it is difficult to say — Serbian uses nothing at all. Пада киша, хладно је, тешко је рећи. The verb stands alone, and any neuter agreement in the sentence is agreement with nothing.

Key Takeaways

- No dummy subject: Пада киша (it's raining), Хладно је (it's cold), Касно је (it's late) - то = that, it — the all-purpose pointer, neuter and indeclinable in the nominative - оно = that yonder, and the neuter of он/она/оно - Accusative clitics: га (masculine and neuter), је (feminine), их (plural) - The clitic matches the noun's gender, not the English it - Impersonal predicates are neuter: било је хладно, тешко је - Изгледа да…, чини се да… — "it seems that," again with no subject

Section D — Grammar

These are the rules for translating it.

1. There is no dummy subject. English requires a subject in every clause and invents it when none exists. Serbian does not:

Пада киша. — It is raining. (literally: rain falls) Хладно је. — It is cold. Касно је. — It is late. Изгледа да… — It seems that… Не вреди. — It's not worth it.

The је in these sentences is the copula agreeing with nothing; the predicate stands in the neuter by default. In the past this produces било је хладно, in the future биће хладно.

2. Pronominal it takes the noun's gender. A thing is он, она or оно according to its grammatical gender:

сто (m) → Видим га. (I see it) књига (f) → Видим је. (I see it) дете (n) → Видим га. (I see it)

Learners who reach for оно whenever English says it will be wrong two times in three.

3. Accusative clitics. га (m/n), је (f), их (pl). Note the clash: је is both the third-person copula and the feminine accusative clitic. Прочитала сам је ("I read it") and Она је овде ("she is here") use the same two letters for different words; position resolves it. When both would occur together, Serbian uses ју: Видела ју је ("she saw her").

4. то versus оно. то is the workhorse: it points at a situation, a statement, or a thing just mentioned, and is what English usually means by that or it. оно points at something remote, and also introduces a relative clause: оно што кажеш ("that which you say"). Both are neuter, and both take the full demonstrative declension when governed by a case: тога, томе, тим.

5. Impersonal verbs. A large class takes no subject at all: пада (of precipitation), грми (it thunders), свиће (it dawns), чини се, изгледа, дешава се, вреди, треба. With these the neuter participle is used in the past: грмело је, чинило се.

6. Neuter agreement with дете. Дете is grammatically neuter, so a child is оно and takes neuter adjectives — гладно дете — regardless of the child's sex. The plural деца is a collective feminine singular in form but takes neuter plural agreement, as noted in Lesson 3.

Common Mistakes

Supplying a subject for weather: Оно пада киша, То је хладно. Say Пада киша, Хладно је.

Using оно for every it: *Купио сам ауто и продао оно. Say продао га.

Saying То је хладно for "it's cold." That sentence means "that thing is cold," of a specific object.

Placing је first: *Је хладно. The clitic needs a host — Хладно је.

Confusing то and тај: то is neuter and points at situations, тај is masculine and modifies a masculine noun.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

Section E — Cultural Context

То is the most flexible word in colloquial Serbian. It absorbs whole situations: То је то ("that's that"), Није то ништа ("it's nothing"), Шта је то с тобом? ("what's the matter with you?"). Spoken Serbian leans on it the way spoken English leans on thing and stuff, and a learner who can deploy то confidently sounds fluent before their grammar deserves it.

The absence of a dummy subject means Serbian weather talk is verb-first and impersonal: Пада, said alone, is a complete sentence meaning "it's raining." Similarly Грми (thundering), Смркава се (getting dark), Захладнело је (it has turned cold). Serbs comment on weather constantly and in these compressed forms.

Ево, ето, ено — the presentative particles of Lesson 1 — most often appear with exactly these clitics: ево га (here it is), ето ти (there you are), ено их (there they are). Ево га! on its own is what a Serb says on finding a lost object, and Ето! is what they say when proved right.

"For a lion to come out of a great thicket is no hard thing; among great peoples the genius weaves his nest. Here above all is the material for a glorious deed, and the proud wreath of triumph to adorn his bold head."

F-C: Original Only

Из грмена великога лафу изаћ трудно није, у великим народима генију се гњ'јездо вије: овде му је поготову материјал к славном дјелу и тријумфа дични в'јенац, да му краси главу смјелу.

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes

трудно није is the impersonal predicate of this lesson: neuter adjective plus negated copula, with no subject. English must supply one — "it is not hard" — and Serbian must not. The logical subject is the infinitive изаћ, and the person for whom it is not hard stands in the dative: лафу.

му је (twice) is the dative clitic of the third person, the same experiencer construction met in Lesson 8. Овде му је материјал — "here to him is the material," where English says "here he has the material."

се вије is a reflexive passive: the nest "weaves itself," meaning it is woven or is built. Serbian prefers this to a true passive throughout, as noted in Lesson 5.

изаћ is an apocopated изаћи, shortened for the metre. Note that this poem is not in the folk decasyllable but in the sixteen-syllable trochaic line Njegoš reserved for the dedication.

к славном дјелу uses к plus the dative from Lesson 6 — the formal "towards," here almost "for."

грмена is the genitive of грмен, an archaic word for a thicket or bush; лаф is a Turkish-mediated form of lion, standard Serbian лав. The text is Ijekavian: дјелу, в'јенац, смјелу.

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Dialogue

га throughout (10.16, 10.17, 10.20, 10.24, 10.27) — the phone is телефон, masculine, so the clitic is га. Had the lost object been торба, every one of these would be је; had it been писмо, га again, this time as a neuter.

тамо га нема (10.20) — negated existential нема with the genitive. Га here is genitive, not accusative: the two are identical for masculine and neuter, which is why the form looks familiar.

Чини ми се да је било (10.18) — impersonal чини се plus the dative experiencer, then a neuter participle било agreeing with nothing in particular. English says "I think"; Serbian says "it seems to me."

Изгледа да (10.22) — the second impersonal of the lesson. Both чини се and изгледа introduce their clause with да.

да ли звони (10.21) — да ли as an indirect question, "whether." The same words that open a direct yes-no question serve as the subordinating conjunction.

оно је ту (10.26) — here оно is not the pronoun for the phone but an emphatic particle, roughly "and there it is, lo and behold." This colloquial оно is very common and quite untranslatable.

Ништа (10.28) — a complete reply meaning "not at all, don't mention it." Serbian answers thanks with ништа, нема на чему, or молим.

вечера је готова (10.30) — готов here means "ready," not "finished." A frequent false friend for learners coming from Russian, where готов carries a narrower sense.

Pronunciation Guide

то (to): toh. A pure /o/, short. Contrast ту (too, here) and та (tah, feminine that) — three words distinguished by the vowel alone.

оно (ono): O-no. Both vowels equal in quality, stress on the first.

га (ga): gah. Unstressed clitic; in speech it fuses with the preceding word — видео га is VEE-de-o-ga.

је (je): yeh. The busiest two letters in Serbian: copula, feminine accusative clitic, and part of јесте. Always unstressed as a clitic.

киша (kiša): KEE-sha. ш as English sh.

изгледа (izgleda): eez-GLE-da. The cluster згл is pronounced as written, with no vowel inserted.

џепу (džepu): DJE-poo — hard џ, contrasted once more with the soft ђ of ђак.

Impersonal intonation: sentences like Хладно је and Касно је carry their stress on the adjective, with the clitic trailing off almost inaudibly. Stressing је turns a remark about the weather into an argument about it.
