Lesson 13

Који / што (koji / što) — "That" (the Relative)

CSV entry 13 is that in its pointing and connecting senses. The pointing sense — тај, то — was covered in Lessons 1 and 10. This lesson takes the connecting one: the relative pronoun that joins a clause to a noun. The man that came, the book that I read.

Serbian has two relatives. Који is the full pronoun: it agrees in gender and number with the noun it refers back to, but takes its case from its own clause. That double allegiance is the whole difficulty, and once it is grasped the rest is mechanical.

Што is the invariable alternative, colloquial and very common, usually propped up by a clitic pronoun that carries the case instead: човек што сам га видео ("the man that I saw him").

English can drop the relative — the book I read — and Serbian never can.

Key Takeaways

- који agrees in gender and number with its antecedent, in case with its own clause - Masculine animate accusative uses кога, inanimate који - што is invariable and usually needs a resumptive clitic: што сам га видео - оно што = "that which, what"; сve што = "everything that" - The relative can never be omitted - чији = whose; где / када also serve as relatives of place and time - A non-restrictive clause takes a comma; a restrictive one does not

Section D — Grammar

These are the rules for the relative.

1. The two allegiances of који. The relative looks backwards for its gender and number, and inwards for its case.

Књига (f. sg.) коју (f. sg. ACC — object of читам) читам. Људи (m. pl.) којима (m. pl. DAT — indirect object of писао) сам писао. Град (m. sg.) из кога (m. sg. GEN — governed by из) долазим.

Ask two questions in order: what noun does it refer to (gender and number), and what job does it do in its own clause (case).

2. Declension. који declines like a definite adjective:

masculine: који, кога/којег, коме/којем, кога (animate) / који (inanimate), којим, коме feminine: која, које, којој, коју, којом, којој neuter: које, кога, коме, које, којим, коме plural: који/које/која, којих, којима, које, којима, којима

3. Animacy. In the masculine singular accusative, an animate antecedent takes кога, an inanimate који: пријатељ кога чекам but воз који чекам.

4. што plus resumptive clitic. Colloquial and extremely common. Што never declines; the case is carried by a clitic pronoun later in the clause:

човек што сам га видео — the man that I saw жена што смо је срели — the woman that we met књига што сам је прочитао — the book that I read

In the nominative no clitic is needed: човек што је дошао. This construction is fully acceptable in speech and in dialogue-driven prose, but који is expected in formal writing.

5. оно што, све што, ништа што. With no noun antecedent, што follows a neuter pronoun: оно што кажеш ("what you say"), све што имам ("all I have"), ништа што нисам знао ("nothing I didn't know").

6. чији. The possessive relative, agreeing with the thing possessed: дете чији отац, жена чија кућа, људи чија деца.

7. где and када serve as relatives of place and time, replacing heavier constructions: село где смо летовали for село у коме смо летовали.

8. Commas. A restrictive clause — one that identifies which — takes no comma: Човек који је дошао. A non-restrictive clause — extra information about an already identified person — is fenced with commas: Марко, који никад не касни, …. The rule matches English exactly.

Common Mistakes

Dropping the relative on the English model: *Књига читам је стара. Say књига коју читам.

Making који agree in case with its antecedent instead of its own clause: књига која читам. The book is the object of reading*, so коју.

Ignoring animacy: *пријатељ који чекам. Say кога.

Using што with no resumptive clitic in an oblique case: *жена што смо срели. Say што смо је срели or коју смо срели.

Confusing што the relative with што the conjunction "because" (драго ми је што си дошао) and with шта the question word ("what?"). Three different words, two spellings.

✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾

Section E — Cultural Context

The што construction is a genuine register marker. A Belgrade grandmother says онај човек што ради у пошти; a newsreader says онај човек који ради у пошти. Neither is wrong, but a foreigner using што relatives fluently signals that they learnt the language by ear rather than from a textbook — usually to their credit.

Serbian proverbs lean heavily on relative structures with no antecedent at all: Ко рано рани, две среће граби ("he who rises early seizes two strokes of luck"), Ко другоме јаму копа, сам ће у њу пасти ("he who digs a pit for another will fall into it himself"). The bare ко functions as "whoever," and the main clause needs no pronoun to answer it. This construction is almost extinct in ordinary English — he who survives only in proverbs there too — but it is fully alive in Serbian.

Није злато све што сија is the Serbian form of a proverb found across Europe, from the Latin non omne quod nitet aurum est through Chaucer and Shakespeare. Vuk recorded the Serbian version in the 1836 collection, and it is still the phrase reached for when something looks better than it is.

Section F — Literary Citation

From Српске народне пословице, Вук Стефановић Караџић, 1836. Three proverbs built on relative clauses — two with the bare ко, one with што.

F-B: Natural Text with Translation

Није злато све што сија. Ко другоме јаму копа, сам ће у њу пасти. Ко жели да пева, увек ће наћи песму.

"Not everything that shines is gold. He who digs a pit for another will himself fall into it. He who wishes to sing will always find a song."

F-C: Original Only

Није злато све што сија. Ко другоме јаму копа, сам ће у њу пасти. Ко жели да пева, увек ће наћи песму.

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes

све што сија is the antecedentless што of Section D §5: the neuter све supplies what the relative refers to. Note the Serbian word order — literally "not gold is all that shines" — which puts the denial first and the subject last, exactly the information structure of Lesson 1.

Ко in the second and third proverbs is the conditional-relative "whoever," and the main clause picks it up with сам ("himself") rather than a pronoun. English needs he who and then he; Serbian needs neither.

другоме is the dative of други, "to another." Копати јаму некоме takes a dative of disadvantage — the person harmed stands in the dative, as the person benefited does in Lesson 6.

у њу — accusative of motion, the case of into, with the feminine pronoun agreeing with јама. A locative у њој would mean he is already down there.

ће … пасти and ће наћи are futures with the clitic separated from the infinitive, as always when something else occupies first position.

да пева is the infinitive substitute of Lesson 12, inside a relative clause: "whoever wishes to sing."

песму — the accusative of песма, and the proverb turns on its double sense of song and poem, which in a culture built on sung epic are not distinct.

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Story

која има башту (13.16) versus коју смо тражили — the same noun кућа takes a nominative relative when the house does the having, an accusative when it is sought. Gender and number stay feminine singular throughout; only the case moves.

кога смо звали (13.17) — animate accusative, as in Section D §3. Compare стан који је био прескуп (13.18): a flat is inanimate, so the masculine accusative would be који, and here it is nominative anyway.

што га је поставила (13.19) — the colloquial relative with a resumptive clitic, dropped into an otherwise formal narrative exactly as a Serbian writer would drop it, for the texture of speech.

чији је отац саградио (13.21) — чији agrees with отац (masculine), not with жена. The possessor's gender is irrelevant.

о којој (13.20) and о коме (13.24) — the locative after о, feminine and masculine. Коме and којем are equally correct.

Све што је имала (13.23) — antecedentless што after све, with стало је in the neuter agreeing with све.

под дрветом (13.29) — instrumental of position, and the relative које in the accusative as object of посадио. Two different cases attached to the same tree in one short sentence.

Оно што смо купили није само кућа (13.30) — the sentence closes the story by using the construction the lesson opened with, and the predicate noun stands in the nominative after није.

Pronunciation Guide

који (koji): KO-yee. Two syllables; the ј is a full consonant between the vowels and must be heard. The oblique forms keep first-syllable stress: кога KO-ga, којој KO-yoy, којима KO-yee-ma.

коју (koju): KO-yoo. Distinguish carefully from кога — the feminine accusative and the masculine animate accusative are the two forms learners confuse most.

што (što): shto. One syllable, opening with the шт cluster. Contrast шта (shta), the question word "what."

чији (čiji): CHEE-yee. Hard ч.

сија (sija): SEE-ya. From сијати, to shine. Not to be confused with сећи (to cut) or сејати (to sow).

јаму (jamu): YA-moo. Accusative of јама, a pit or hole dug in the ground.

зарастао (zarastao): za-RAS-tao. Four syllables ending in two separate vowels, -ao, which Serbian never contracts. The same ending appears in every masculine past participle: дошао, био, посадио.

Relative-clause rhythm: a relative clause takes its own light stress and is not set off by a pause in speech unless it is non-restrictive. Човек који је дошао runs as one breath group; Марко, који никад не касни, has audible pauses at both commas.
