DISCOVERY CONTEXT

One of Epicurus’s three surviving letters (with Herodotus and Menoeceus). Young Pythocles feared celestial phenomena - thunder meant Zeus’s anger, comets spelled doom. Epicurus systematically destroys supernatural explanations, replacing fear with physics.

Herculaneum fragments confirm Diogenes Laertius’s text and add marginal commentary showing ancient debates.

Translation: “Epicurus to Pythocles, greeting.

Cleon brought me your letter in which you continued showing friendship worthy of our care for you, and you tried not unpersuasively to grasp the reasonings contributing to the blessed life...”

On Thunder (D.L. X.100 + PHerc. fragment)

Greek (combining sources):βροντὴ δύναται γίνεσθαι καὶ κατὰ πνεύματος ἐν τοῖς κοιλώμασι τῶν νεφῶν ἀνείλησιν... καὶ κατὰ πυρὸς ἀποσβεστικὸν ψόφον ἐν αὐτοῖς...

Translation: “Thunder can occur from wind rolling in hollow spaces of clouds... and from fire’s extinguishing noise in them...

The Chaldean or seer seeing a comet and predicting disasters knows nothing but sometimes hits by chance...”
