τὸ δὲ ἱκανὸν οὕτως ὁρίζομεν· ὅσον ἀπαλλάττει φόβου πενίας καὶ παρέχει σχολὴν πρὸς φιλοσοφίαν καὶ φιλίαν. πᾶν τὸ πλέον, βάρος.

ὁ Κράσσος μυρίας οἰκίας ἔχων οὐδεμιᾷ οἰκεῖ ἡδέως· ὁ δὲ σοφὸς μιᾷ ἀρκούμενος πανταχοῦ ἐστιν οἴκοι...

Translation: “Wealth is not an end but a tool for tranquility. One gathering beyond sufficiency is slave to money, not master.

We define sufficiency thus: enough to remove fear of poverty and provide leisure for philosophy and friendship. Everything more is burden.

Crassus having ten thousand houses dwells pleasantly in none; the wise man content with one is everywhere at home...”

One must educate them, not only punish, give hopes of freedom, and share festivals. For thus they’ll serve not from fear but goodwill...”
