DISCOVERY CONTEXT

Part II of Philodemus’s massive work on piety. While Part I attacks traditional religion, Part II builds the Epicurean alternative: gods who exist but don’t intervene, piety without fear, worship without transaction.

The margins show VIOLENT REACTIONS - ancient readers scandalized by gods who don’t care about human affairs.

Column XII: The Gods’ Perfect Indifference

Greek text (substantial fragment):οἱ θεοὶ μακάριοι καὶ ἄφθαρτοι ὄντες οὔτε αὐτοὶ πράγματα ἔχουσιν οὔτε ἄλλοις παρέχουσιν· ὀργαὶ γὰρ καὶ χάριτες ἀσθενείας εἰσίν, οὐ δυνάμεως.

ὁ δὲ νομίζων τοὺς θεοὺς τιμωρεῖν ἢ εὐεργετεῖν οὐ θεοὺς νομίζει ἀλλὰ τυράννους κοσμικοὺς μεγάλους, δεομένους θυμιαμάτων ὥσπερ βασιλεῖς κολακείας.

εὐσέβεια δ’ ἐστὶν οὐχὶ φόβος οὐδὲ ἐλπὶς ἀμοιβῆς, ἀλλὰ θαυμασμὸς τῆς τελείας φύσεως ἣν οὐδὲν ταράττει...

Translation: “The gods being blessed and imperishable neither have troubles themselves nor cause them for others; for anger and gratitude belong to weakness, not power.

One who thinks the gods punish or reward doesn’t believe in gods but in great cosmic tyrants, needing incense like kings need flattery.

Piety is neither fear nor hope of reward, but wonder at the perfect nature which nothing disturbs...”

Translation: “...for what would those who have everything need? Or how would they sell favor like merchants? One who sacrifices to receive doesn’t sacrifice but shops, one who prays to persuade doesn’t pray but bribes...

The Epicureans sacrifice according to custom, not thinking the gods need it, but to participate in the city and not seem impious...”
