DISCOVERY CONTEXT

A fragment of Chrysippus’s massive work defending cosmic providence. He wrote 705 books; we have fragments of ~15. This piece argues that even apparent evils serve the cosmic good - bedbugs wake us up, mice teach us carefulness.

Found among Stoic texts. Margins show Epicurean reader’s FURY.

Column III: The Bedbug Argument

Greek text (infamous passage):...]καὶ οἱ κόρεις δὲ χρησίμως γεγόν[ασιν· ἐγείρου]σι γὰρ ἡμᾶς καὶ οὐκ ἐῶσι π[ολὺν χρόνον] καθεύδειν, καὶ οἱ μύες παρέχ[ουσι τὸ μὴ ἀ]μελῶς ἀποτίθεσθαι τὰ πράγμ[ατα.

πᾶν γὰρ] τὸ γινόμενον κατὰ τὸν κοινὸν [λόγον γίνεται], καὶ οὐδὲν παρὰ τὸν λόγον το[ῦτον οἷόν τε] γενέσθαι. εἰ δὲ τοῦτο, πάντα κ[αλῶς καὶ κατὰ] πρόνοιαν...

Translation: “...and bedbugs too have come to be usefully; for they wake us and don’t allow us to sleep too long, and mice provide that we not carelessly put things away.

For everything that happens happens according to the common reason, and nothing can happen contrary to this reason. If so, all things happen well and according to providence...”

One saying ‘it could have happened otherwise’ doesn’t understand the administration of the whole...”
