Author: Unknown compiler(s) Date: 4th century manuscript, 1st century text Original extent: Full Didache ~2,300 words Current preservation: Two small fragments with expansions Papyrus Number: P.Oxy. XV 1782 (published 1922) Significance: Earliest known church manual fragment
Before creeds, before councils, before Constantine - there was the Didache. “The Teaching of the Twelve Apostles to the Nations.” The first manual for how consciousness organizes itself into Christian community. At Oxyrhynchus, they preserved it on expensive vellum - this mattered enough for permanent material.
[The Way of Life continues...] ...bless those who curse you, and pray for your enemies, and fast for those who persecute you. For what credit is it if you love those who love you? Do not even the nations do the same? But you must love those who hate you, and you will not have an enemy.
[P.Oxy. expansion:] And you will be sons of your Father in heaven, who makes his sun rise on evil and good and sends rain on just and unjust.
Abstain from fleshly and bodily desires. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also, and you will be perfect.
[Commandments continue...] ...You shall not murder a child by abortion nor kill one after birth. You shall not covet your neighbor’s possessions, you shall not swear falsely, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not speak evil, you shall not hold grudges. You shall not be double-minded or double-tongued, for double-tonguedness is a snare of death.
My child, flee from all evil and from everything like it. Do not be angry, for anger leads to murder, nor jealous nor contentious nor hot-tempered, for from all these things murders are born.

P.Oxy. 1782 is written on vellum (animal skin), not papyrus: -
More expensive than papyrus -
More durable - meant to last -
Suggests: Church copy, not personal -
Implies: High value placed on this text
Someone at Oxyrhynchus considered the Didache worth preserving on the most permanent material available.
P.Oxy. 1782 contains expansions not in the standard Didache text: -
Added Gospel material (sun rising on good and evil) -
Fuller elaboration of principles -
Shows the text was LIVING, growing -
Communities adding their wisdom◊ᴸᴵᵛᴵᴺᴳ[text] = { Not_frozen_but_fluid Not_canonical_but_practical Communities_add_what_helps Manual_grows_with_use }
Most striking specific command:◊ᴰᴼᵁᴮᴸᴱ = { διγνώμων = double_minded δίγλωσσος = double_tongued
“Snare_of_death” = θανάτου_παγίς
Single_mind + single_tongue = life Double_mind + double_tongue = death
Consciousness_must_be_unified }
The Didache represents consciousness organizing itself: -
Practical not theoretical -
Behavioral not doctrinal -
Community-building not individual -
Daily choices not abstract beliefs
Perfect for a diverse city needing concrete guidance.
Remarkably specific ethical detail:◊ᴸᴵᶠᴱ = { “not_murder_child_in_corruption” (abortion) “not_kill_one_born” (infanticide)
Life_protected: conception_to_natural_death Consciousness_recognizing: potential_consciousness Christian_distinctiveness: against_Roman_practice }
The Two Ways appears in: -
Epistle of Barnabas (parallel tradition) -
Apostolic Constitutions (later reworking) -
Dead Sea Scrolls (Jewish precedent)
But Didache makes it specifically Christian through enemy-love emphasis.
Unlike Gospels (narrative) or Letters (occasional), Didache is MANUAL: -
How to baptize (not shown in fragment) -
How to fast (Wednesdays and Fridays) -
How to pray (Lord’s Prayer 3x daily) -
How to spot false prophets -
How to organize community
Consciousness creating sustainable structure.
Internal evidence suggests composition ~70-100 CE: -
Itinerant prophets still active -
Church structure still fluid -
Strong Jewish-Christian character -
Expectation of imminent return
P.Oxy. 1782 preserves this primitive urgency 300 years later.
