English of is a preposition; Serbian's equivalent is a case. To say "the roof of the house," Serbian puts house into the genitive and places it after the noun it belongs to: кров куће. No preposition intervenes. The genitive is the most heavily used of the seven Serbian cases, and this lesson is the first serious encounter with case as the engine of the language.
The genitive covers possession (кров куће), origin (из Србије), material (од злата), quantity (много људи), and time (прошле године). It is also demanded by a long list of prepositions — без, до, из, код, око, поред, после, преко, због — and by any number above four.
Serbian has a second way of saying "of" for people: the possessive adjective, formed from a personal name or kinship term. Марков ауто is "Marko's car" — an adjective, not a genitive, and preferred whenever the possessor is a single named individual.
Key Takeaways
- Bare genitive after a noun = English of: кров куће, крај романа - Genitive singular endings: masculine/neuter -а, feminine -е - од + genitive = made of, from; из + genitive = out of, from (place of origin) - Quantity governs the genitive: много људи, чаша вина, пет књига - Possessive adjectives for named people: Марков, очев, мајчин - Prepositions taking the genitive: без, до, из, код, око, поред, после, преко, ради, због - Genitive of time: прошле године, једног дана

These are the rules for the genitive.
1. Formation. Singular: masculine and neuter take -а (брат → брата, село → села), feminine -е (кућа → куће). Plural: masculine -а with a lengthened vowel (брат → браћа… брата, but regularly градова), feminine -а (кућа → кућа), neuter -а (села). Feminine i-stems take -и (ствар → ствари).
2. Possession without a preposition. The possessor follows the possessed and stands in the genitive: кров куће, крај романа, књига мога брата. English reverses the order and inserts of, or uses the apostrophe; Serbian does neither.
3. Possessive adjectives. When the possessor is a named person or a close kin term, Serbian prefers an adjective built from the name:
Марко → Марков, Маркова, Марково отац → очев; мајка → мајчин; брат → братов; сестра → сестрин
Марков ауто is normal; ауто Марка is possible but stilted. Use the genitive when the possessor is modified — ауто мога брата, not мојбратов ауто.
4. од versus из. из means out of, and marks origin from an enclosed space or a country: из куће, из Србије, из торбе. од means from a point, a person, or made of a material: од Београда до Ниша, писмо од мајке, прстен од злата. Both govern the genitive.
5. Quantity. Every quantity word takes the genitive: много људи, мало времена, неколико дана, пуно посла, килограм сира. So does every number from five upward: пет књига, сто динара. Numbers 2–4 take the old dual, identical to the genitive singular: две књиге, три брата.
6. Prepositions with the genitive. The largest group in the language: без (without), до (up to), из (out of), код (at, chez), око (around), поред (beside), после (after), пре (before), преко (across), против (against), ради (for the sake of), због (because of), изнад (above), испод (below), иза (behind), испред (in front of), између (between).
7. Genitive of time and date. прошле године (last year), сваког дана (every day), једног јутра (one morning). Dates are ordinal plus genitive month: двадесет осмог јуна (on the 28th of June).
8. Genitive of negation. After a negated existential the subject stands in the genitive: Нема хлеба, Није било никога.
Common Mistakes
Inserting a preposition to translate of: *кров од куће. The bare genitive is correct — кров куће. од here would mean the roof was made out of a house.
Confusing из and од: *Он је од Србије. Say из Србије.
Using the nominative after numbers: *пет књиге. Say пет књига.
Forgetting that код means "at someone's place," not "at" generally: код лекара is at the doctor's, у болници is in hospital.
Building a possessive adjective from a modified possessor. Мојбратов does not exist; say мога брата.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
Serbian surnames are themselves genitive-descended: the suffix -ић is a patronymic diminutive, so Петровић is "little one of Peter," Јовановић "of John." Roughly a third of all Serbs bear a surname of this shape, and the pattern extends across the whole South Slavic area. The -ов/-ев possessive adjective of this lesson is the same morpheme that built Марков and, historically, place names like Краљево ("the king's") and Смедерево.
The слава — the family's patron-saint day, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list — is named with a genitive or a possessive adjective: Никољдан, Ђурђевдан, слава свете Петке. Asking a Serb Која вам је слава? is asking which saint the household descends under, a question that identifies a family more precisely than a surname does.
Genitive constructions dominate the epic register. Folk poetry piles them: очи соколове, крила лабудова, чуда великога. The effect is weighty and formulaic, and modern writers reach for it when they want gravity. Newspaper Serbian, by contrast, favours the possessive adjective and shorter phrases.
Код deserves special attention because it has no clean English equivalent and is used constantly: код куће (at home), код лекара (at the doctor's), код нас (at our place, and by extension "in our country"). Код нас се то тако ради — "that's how it's done where we come from" — is one of the most frequently spoken sentences in the language.

F-D: Grammar and Vocabulary Notes
чуда великога is a genitive of exclamation — a construction with no English parallel, in which the bare genitive expresses astonishment: "what a wonder!" It survives in modern speech in fixed cries like чуда божјега and среће моје.
Југовића мајка (line 5) shows the bare possessive genitive of this lesson in its purest form: "the mother of the Jugovići," possessor before possessed here for metrical reasons, where ordinary prose would say мајка Југовића. Folk verse moves the genitive freely; the case ending, not the position, carries the meaning.
девет Југовића and крила лабудова are genitive plurals after a numeral and after a noun. Serbian handles both with the same case, which is why a learner who masters the genitive plural has solved most of the counting system.
очи соколове is not a genitive but a possessive adjective — соколов, "falcon's," agreeing with очи. Set beside крила лабудова, a true genitive plural, the two lines show both strategies of this lesson in adjacent verses, chosen by the singer for the metre.
Богдане and боже are vocatives, the seventh case, used in direct address. Бог → боже, Богдан → Богдане. The vocative is alive and obligatory in Serbian: calling someone by the nominative sounds abrupt or foreign.
слеже се is an aorist, the simple past of folk narrative, distinct from the compound perfect of modern speech. Aorists give epic poetry its immediacy and are still heard in Montenegro and southern Serbia.

Part D — Grammar Notes for the Description
мога деде (5.16) — деда is masculine in gender but declines like a feminine a-stem: деда, деде, деди, деду. The possessive мога is masculine, agreeing with the gender rather than the ending. The same applies to тата, чика, владика, and to masculine names in -а such as Никола.
од камена … од црепа (5.17) — од of material, one of the few places where Serbian and English use a preposition in the same way.
Испред, иза, поред, око, без, до, због (5.18–5.29) — seven genitive prepositions in a single passage. This density is normal in descriptive Serbian and is the practical reason the genitive must be learnt first among the oblique cases.
пуна поврћа (5.19) — adjectives of fullness and emptiness govern the genitive: пун, сит, жељан, свестан. Поврће is a collective neuter, like грожђе in Lesson 3.
мирише на (5.20) — "smells of" uses на with the accusative, not the genitive. A small trap: English of is not always Serbian genitive.
дедина столица (5.22) — possessive adjective from деда, feminine form agreeing with столица. Compare дедин сто, дедино имање.
много старих књига (5.23) — quantity word plus genitive plural, with the adjective in the genitive plural too: старих.
Без струје се живело (5.24) and Вода се носила (5.25) — impersonal and passive reflexives. Serbian prefers these to a true passive: literally "it was lived without electricity," "water carried itself."
до шездесетих (5.24) — до plus the genitive plural of an ordinal used as a noun: "until the sixties."
Прошле године, сваког лета (5.27–5.28) — the adverbial genitive of time, with no preposition at all.
✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾ ✾ ❦ ✾ ❦ ✾
куће (kuće): KOO-che. The genitive ending -е is a clear /e/. Do not reduce it to a schwa — English speakers habitually weaken final vowels, and Serbian case endings are precisely where meaning lives.
Југовића (Jugovića): yoo-GO-vee-cha. Four syllables. The ћ is soft; the surname suffix -ић in the genitive plural lengthens to -ића.
шљива (šljiva): SHLYEE-va. Two consonants that English never combines: ш then љ. Plum, and by extension шљивовица, the national brandy.
црепа (crepa): TSRE-pa. Initial цр- with syllabic р following the affricate. Practise црн, црв, црква — all one syllable before the ending.
без струје (bez struje): bez STROO-ye. Four consonants across the word boundary. Serbian permits clusters English does not; do not insert a vowel.
Стress in the genitive: most nouns keep the stress of the nominative — кућа → куће, брат → брата. A few shift or lengthen, notably in the genitive plural: књига → књи́га with a long vowel. The lengthening is what distinguishes genitive plural књига from nominative singular књига in speech.
Vocative forms in the citation: боже, Богдане. The vocative -е is stressed on the stem, and the whole word carries the rising intonation of address.
